I needed to post an online review of a book in order to get my grade up in English class. Read my review if you like, don't if you don't. Maybe other people can recommend other books they like or what ever, or this thread can just die, but I can get credit for this assignment. Without further ado:
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand (contains minor spoilers):
Unbroken, the story of Louie Zamperini’s life, is an almost unreal account of one man’s life. From being a hell-raising boy, to becoming a track star with Olympic aspirations, flying bombers in WWII, and his experiences as a Japanese prisoner of war, this story is filled with excitement, tension, and a good laugh every now and then for good measure. While there are a few parts of the story that get to be a little dry, overall the book keeps readers attention fairly well, not being overly detailed, but providing enough information to paint the entire picture.
(Mild spoiler alert) Readers first meet Louie Zamperini as a child in the 1920s. He is a wild, untameable kid, and he is constantly thieving, fighting, and generally causing trouble. Louie turns his life around when his brother Pete gets him into running. Louie becomes consumed with training, and turns out to be one of the fastest runners in the country. Louie competes in the 1936 Olympics, and is aspiring to go to the 1940 Olympics to compete in the 1500 meter, but his hopes are dashed when war breaks out. Louie joins the Army Air Corps, and begins to do bombing missions with his crew when he is shot down. He and two other crew members float at sea for over 40 days and are then “rescued” by the Japanese. Louie floats through several POW camps until the war’s end. But even after he returns home, memories of the war still haunt him.
I personally found Unbroken to be a great read. The author did a fantastic job of painting a picture of what life was like for Louie Zamperini, from childhood until his old age. I also found the story to be particularly inspirational. As a Christian, Louie’s faith on the ocean was astounding to me, as was his return to God after the war. This tail of survival, and at the end, forgiveness, is incredible, and I highly recommend it.
