I'm looking to get back into riding at the good old age of 38 after nearly 20 years away and looking for a bike . Seen a academy desire on chain reaction cycles that looks ok but not sure I want to spend that much to get going again , I would prefer a new bike so I have no doubts about what it has been put through.
Looking for something lightish with 21 TT as I'm 6"2 and built like a road rider ( which I do as well as MTB ) and short chain stays ,hope some help comes soon as have looked at mafia madmain but read bad things

TBH other than it being a brand i haven't heard of its looks like a decent spec, double walled rims, full cromo frame and forks, sealed bearings etc, Grumpysteve might be able to put in some input in regards to the brand themselves

There is always the Used option, that's the way i went, helps if you know how to twiddle a spanner, I picked up a WethePeople Crysis for £40, not quite on the same spec as yours but not far off, it was still a £400 bike when released though, i just got back into it as well @37

Yeah it looks good on paper, but I've not really heard of academy either. Probably very similar to a mongoose scan r120 which you can pick up from halfords for probably a bit less?

Looked at r120 seems a bit heavy , I've not heard of academy either but looks good spec .
Not sure of who makes good bikes anymore as it seems like some of the bikes that used to be good when I was riding aren't now. I've had a few bikes back when I was riding custom build skyway ta , ruption Sri team , s & m dirt bike custom build , Hoffman EP ( flatland ) when a specialised box section thing , that's not including the 2 turds I had as a kid lol.
If I went used I don't want to spend much as will probably need to buy bits and get it all fitted as have no tools and not good with a spanner etc

Around here you could easily get a custom build for less money than those bikes. Probably without a brake though.
For that budget, the r120 or the academy are probably about the best you can get. But both of those bikes are also easily upgradeable (you won't need to faf about with old headsets or US bottom brackets). Anything cheaper and you'll be stuck with what you've got unless you change a few parts at a time

Thanks will start putting some cash away for one of them probably the academy as mongoose specs say it's about heavy for me .
Can't find anything on eBay / gumtree for a good price that doesn't either look to great or more than what I want to spend on a used bike

Just seen a 2013 wethepeople trust sort of close for a reasonable price , thinking about going to have a look at it anything I should look for ?

Everything really, spin the wheels and check there isn't any buckling or out of true and spin smooth, check there are no broken spokes or badly worn tyres, check there is no excess movement in ALL bearings like the headset by sitting on bike and pushing/pulling bars, check the wheels by holding top and bottom and push top and pull bottom and vice versa (wiggle it) to make sure wheel bearings are ok, pedal it and make sure BB bearings feel smooth, check there is no excess wear or damage on sprockets, check brakes if there are any, check frame forks and bars for any dents or cracks, and basically look at it, does it look newish? or does it look like its had a hard life?
