Past Weekend’s Winners in Skate and BMX Advance to Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals in Salt Lake City

Burr Ridge, Ill. – June 14, 2010 – Competitions at Da Compound in Perris, Calif. and Ecke YMCA in Encinitas, Calif. turned out two skate and two BMX finalists from this past weekend’s Gatorade Free Flow Tour contests. Da Compound winners Larry Edgar (BMX dirt)  and Daniel Sandoval (BMX park),as well as Ecke YMCA’s winners Brendon Villanueva (skate park) and Jimmy Wilkins (skate vert) have all advanced to the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals taking place September 16-19.

Becoming the first-ever BMX dirt winner on the Gatorade Free Flow Tour, sixteen-year-old Edgar of Corona, Calif.  earned the victory at Da Compound, setting the bar high with his final run of a 3 tuck, double whip, orbital 360, and 360 whip. Finishing in second and third respectively, Sandoval and Kevin Peraza will also advance to the dirt finals in Salt Lake City. Due to the three-stop schedule of the dirt discipline, the top three competitors from each stop will move on to the Finals in Salt Lake City.

After throwing down to win the competition, Edgar admitted, “Sandoval is always good competition. I’m psyched to go back to Salt Lake City this year for dirt!”

In the BMX park contest, 15-year-old Sandoval clinched his spot in the Finals with a run that included 720 whip, front flip, down whip, flair, and super whip.

“It was a pretty good day,” Sandoval confessed with exhilaration.“I can’t believe I landed my front flip, I haven’t tried one in months –  Psyched for the finals!”

Edgar’s previous trip to the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals was in 2009, where he competed in BMX park.

“Overall this contest is awesome; it went really well, and it’s sick to see someone getting behind the dirt scene,” said Compound’s Shane Guillen. “It’s dope that Gatorade is stepping up to get kids motivated to compete!”

On Sunday, Villanueva won the skate park competition at Magdalena Ecke YMCA in Encinitas, Calif.

Fifteen-year-old Villanueva of Poway, Calif. proved he deserved the skate park victory at Ecke YMCA, topping the incredible talent pool with a solid kickflip manual kickflip out and hardflip backside lipslide combination. Bradley Elias came in a close second with Anthony Estrada finishing in third place.

Crediting the other ams, Villanueva said, “I’m really excited to be going back to the finals! It was heavy competition, but I’m glad I won.”

On the vert ramp, Wilkins used his last run to convince the judges he was top am. The 16-year-old put together a mute 540, stale 540, and backside tail with gusto, earning his way to Salt Lake City. Tom Shaar and Joey Hamlisch rounded out the podium.

“I was super pumped to just finally come out to San Diego; I’ve been wanting to skate here forever,” said the Columbus, Ohio native Wilkins. “It’s pretty awesome to win the contest too! I’m looking forward to going back to the finals in Salt Lake City.”

Wilkins was a wildcard skate vert finalist and Villanueva was a park finalist, winning the Fontana, Calif. stop, in the 2009 Gatorade Free Flow Tour.

“Today’s contest was a big success,” said Ecke YMCA’s skate park coordinator Heather Randant. “A lot of talented skaters came out and we were really impressed with the turnout.. Thanks to everyone who came out and participated!”

With the win, Edgars, Sandoval, Villanueva and Wilkins all earn an automatic bid into the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals that will take place at the Dew Tour’s Toyota Challenge, September 16-19, 2010 in Salt Lake City, Utah at EnergySolutions Arena.
