Good starter bike, some pre-assembly issues (product review)

The Good:

Good value for the money, works well once dialed in, great fit for my 6yr old who isn't tall enough for a 20". Bike was partially assembled when delivered. Mat Hoffman hand-signed the card that came with the bike.

The Bad:

Plastic chain guard (which was installed from the factory) didn't fit or wasn't installed properly and rubbed the crank; I just removed it.
Headset and wheel bearings were extremely tight/rough; I had to adjust all. I could not adjust rear wheel bearings on one side because I didn't have a thin/special wrench to separate the inner cone from the nut.
No front brake; I ordered/installed separately.
The freewheel operation is rough/noisy; not what I'm used to from Shimano freewheels from bikes in the 1980s.

Overall Review: Overall, a good investment for my son. This is his 2nd bike (1st bike was a smaller Trek with training wheels which we later removed). Due to items in "the bad" section, it took a long time to get the bike set up and dialed in.

Great frame (product review)

The Good:

Heat treated dropouts, gyro tabs, very responsive frame. Seriously tough frame.

The Bad:

Dropouts are tiny, which is a problem for people who use freewheels (My wheels originally came off my old bike, which had a 16t freewheel on it), because there's gonna be some slack that you can't get rid of without chain tensioners (I mean, you can get rid of it, but it's just gonna slip forward anyways so, yeah), and, surprise surprise, you can't put any on. However, if you have a cassette like a 9T or something, then something interesting is gonna happen. Basically, to remove the slack you have to install the wheel and remove as many links as possible, however, this means that when your tire pops, you're gonna need a chainbreaker handy. It can be done without one but it's a bitch to do so. Even then I'd still recommend the frame. Brake mounts are an absolute pain, what I did was just take some red threadlock and tightened them onto the frame as tight as possible, however this probably isn't a concern for you if you ride brakeless.

Overall Review: I got this frame around Christmas time for myself at half off over from planetbmx. I got the frame in black and it's quite a good frame.
